(R 14) A STUDY OF MENTAL HEALTH AND ADJUSTMENT IN SCIENCE AND ART STUDENTS

The investigator in this paper tried to explore mental health and adjustment in science and art College students. The study was conducted in Bhiwani District of Haryana. The sample of the study consists of 150 College students who are studying in B.Sc. and B.A.; there are 75 science students (both boys and girls) and 75 art students. Mental health checklist developed by Kumar (1992) was used to measure the mental health status of the students. Adjustment inventory for College students constructed by Sinha & Singh was used to measure the adjustment level of the students. The‘t’ test was used to compare the mean score of science and art students. The result revealed that there were significant difference exits between science and art students at.05 level of significance. Art students have had better mental health status and better adjustment level in comparison with science students.

The paper deals with the spiritual education with special reference to the Tagore’s Naturalist Philosophy in which Tagore’s life philosophy influence spiritual education. The paper also deals with the Cardinal Principles of his educational philosophy based on Freedom, Creative self-expression, and Active communion with nature and man which are the integral part of spiritual education. In this paper an attempt has been made to recognize, analyze, evaluate and critically examine the dominant factors responsible for strengthening spiritual education in Tagore’s philosophy. The paper concludes ‘Spiritual Education’ as “it is education which helps to fulfill the potentialities of the individuals through the Doctrine of Mother Nature, Universal Brotherhood, Freedom, Service, Co-operation, Love, Sympathy, Wisdom, Peace and Harmony, Truth, Tolerance, Self-control, Self-Confidence, self-expression, and Self-Realization and to prepare them to solve the everyday problems for life creatively and constructively in the new situation of the socio-psycho-physical environment for attaining the highest values and ideas of education, if the teachers enable to modify such kind of behavior patterns of individuals in the lap of Nature, - this is spiritual education.”

In the era of globalization, modernization, fashion, inflated lifestyle, glamour and showbiz, the youth is getting too channelized to perceive purchases of their likes by customer valuation and appeals. In the competitive markets are frequently exposed to new experiments, challenges and technological advancements. Consumers have wider choice, accessibility, awareness and so customer satisfaction, loyalty, value addition becomes important. Companies stand to the challenges by giving more importance to customer value. The present study is an attempt to identify products of youth interest and appeal and measure the overall valuation applied after use of the product in terms with the levels of satisfaction, loyalty, value addition etc. The implication of study justifies the taste of youth in terms with their lifestyle, taste bud, modernization and westernized outlook. The purpose of the study is to measure the magnitude of purchases and preferences made by the younger generation so meticulously to enhance their beauty that at times they get cheated out, duped and misleaded by advertisements, window display of products, appealing talk of salesmen etc.

AUTISTIC CHILD AND TEACHER: SOME SUGGESTIONS FOR HANDLING AN AUTISTIC CHILD

Paper is about tips to teacher for educating an autistic child. Paper starts with explaining concept of autism spectrum distinguishing autism from Asperger syndrome and PDD-NOS. autism has been explained in terms of lack of social, communication and imagination skills. Author elaborates help teacher can provide to the autistic child in the domains of pedagogy, information processing and behavioral management. Pedagogic help involves- Using concrete learning material, giving one task at a time, sequencing the learning tasks, using preferred sense for learning and allowing preferred mode of speech; information processing help involves- ensuring eye contact, using regression as tool of learning, and handling problems of visual processing; finally behavior management includes- reducing attention span, avoiding distractions and irritants, controlling hyperactivity, attending specific difficulty, attuning to technology help, handling issue of sameness in non academic routines. Paper ends the paper with very important aspect of ‘Savant syndrome’ and ‘Savant skills’. Teacher is suggested to run two layered program including ‘Individualized education program’ (IEP) for compensating social, communication and cognitive deficit and a ‘Spring board program’ for boosting and giving expression to the savant skills of autistic or acquired savants. Author remained indecisive about whether these suggestions can work in inclusive classroom or are workable only in one to one situation.

A STUDY ON SOCIAL INTELLIGENCE AMONG ARTS AND SCIENCE COLLEGE STUDENTS

 The purpose of the study was to find out the social intelligence of Arts and Science college students. The sample was collected from 250 Arts and Science college students studying UG and PG courses in Namakkal District of Tamilnadu, India. For data collection used the Social intelligence scale was constructed and Standardized by Dr.N.K. Chadda and Usha Ganesan. The study revealed that the Arts and Science college students are having high level of social intelligence and irrespective of sub samples of Arts and Science college students are having high level of social intelligence. The sub samples of gender and management shows not significant difference between in their social intelligence and the sub samples of locality and qualification shows significant difference in their social intelligence.

The aim of the present research was to investigate the relationship of Cognitive style, Achievement in science, Gender and their interaction on scientific creativity of secondary school students. Survey method was used. The sample comprised of 158 students of Classes IX and X studying in schools affiliated to Central Board of Secondary Education in SBS Nagar district of Punjab. Standardized tools used to access the variables were Majumdar Scientific Creativity Test and Group Embedded Figures Test by Witkin, Oltman, Ruskin and Karp. Marks of students from school records were taken as a measure of their Achievement in science. The data was analyzed using ANOVA. Scientific creativity was found to be significantly influenced by Achievement in science and Gender. Scientific Creativity was found to be independent of Cognitive style. Scientific Creativity of secondary school students was found to be independent of interaction between Cognitive Style and Achievement in Science and between Cognitive style and Gender..

 Magnitude and dimension of urban poverty manifest itself in the emergence of exclusionary urban processes characterised by lack of basic services to slum dwellers and low income groups. Pro-poor components of JNNURM become very relevant in this context. This paper tries to analyse the pattern of work done under the Sub-Mission of JNNURM on Basic Services to the Urban Poor (BSUP) and Rajiv Awas Yojana. State level analysis reveals that performances of Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, West Bengal, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh, Karnataka, Delhi and Kerala are satisfactory in terms of number of dwelling units constructed under the BSUP of JNNURM. Alarmingly, Jharkhand, Bihar, Rajasthan, Goa, Uttrakhand, Arunachal Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh performed badly. Serious intervention is needed in these states. Rajiv Awas Yojana was launched with the main objective of making Indian cities ‘slum free’. Lack of clear road map for its time-bound implementation puts a question mark on its success.

CAREER CHOICE CONFLICTS OF ADOLESCENTS IN RELATION TO GENDER AND INTELLIGENCE

 Today is a time of science and technology, hundreds of vocations have been thrown open to an individual. Hence the study conducted by the investigator to find the conflicts of selection of career of adolescents in relation to gender and intelligence. Sample consists of 400 adolescents (200 male and 200 female) students of 10th standard will be selected from 15-20 schools of Patiala district. On the sample two test will be administered i.e. GMAT (General Mental Ability Test) by Jalota and self constructed scale of conflicts in career selection. Mean standard deviation and percentiles, correlation are completed on achievement gain scores to understand the nature of data and One or two way ‘ANALYSIS OF VARIANCE’ is employed on the Conflicts in career selection. The result indicated that Male have highest conflicts in career selection due to personal dimension and female have highest conflicts in career selection due to parents.

 Present research aims to compare the cognitive style of Junior College Students studying in science stream with respect to gender and locality. The sample of the study was selected by Stratified Random Sampling method which includes 400 junior college students of Jalna District studying in science stream from rural and urban areas. Tool used for the research was standardized Cognitive style inventory by Dr. Praveen Kumar Jha. Research finding reveals that junior college science stream students’ posses systematic cognitive style with respect to gender and locality. Male students’ posses’ average level of systematic style whereas in female the level is high. The level of intuitive style among male students is low whereas in female it is average. Result also reveals that the level of systematic and intuitive style is average among rural and urban science stream students. Further finding reveals that there is significant difference in the systematic and intuitive cognitive style among male and female junior college students of science stream. Also it was found that there is no significant difference in the systematic and intuitive cognitive style respectively among rural and urban junior college students of science stream.

 The present investigation has been undertaken in order to study the Emotional Intelligence of student teacher in Tamil Nadu state. By using the random sampling technique 622 student teachers were selected from various education colleges in Tamil Nadu state. Normative survey method was used. This study is intended to find out the levels of Emotional intelligence of student teachers and if there is any significant difference between the selected pairs of sub-samples. Emotional Intelligence scale constructed and validated by Hyde, Dhar, & Pethe, (2001) was used to collect the data. This study reveals that the majority of student teachers Emotionally Intelligence were high. There exists significant difference between sub samples related to email holders, and the type of college they studied.

GENERAL WELL-BEING IN ADOLESCENTS ON THE BASIS OF GENDER AND LOCALE

 General Well-being is a combination of physical, emotional and social well-being which together is commonly
referred to as the health triangle. The present investigation was attempted to find out the influence of gender and
locale and their interaction on general well-being and its subscales in adolescents. The sample comprised of 340
adolescents randomly drawn from metropolitan area (Delhi) and non-metropolitan area (Bahadurgarh). Data were
analyzed by using 2×2 factorial design. Results showed a significant influence of gender on general well-being,
emotional well-being, social well-being and school well-being in adolescents. A significant influence of locale on
physical well-being and emotional well-being was also observed. Further, results reflect a significant interactive
influence of gender and locale on general well-being, emotional well-being, social well-being and school well-being
in adolescents. The findings of the study show that girls were higher on general well-being, social well-being and
school well-being and boys were higher on emotional well-being. Further, non-metropolitan adolescents were
higher on physical well-being than metropolitan adolescents and metropolitan adolescents were higher on
emotional well-being than non-metropolitan adolescents. These findings have vital implications to parents, teachers,
psychologists, counsellors, researchers, health policy-makers and school administrators to understand the influence
of gender and locale on general well-being in adolescents. Delimitations of the study and suggestions for future
researches have also been discussed.

It speaks of main ways in which internet has significantly and in a positive manner influenced music and they include mainly creating and storing music, reproducing and spreading music, popularizing music and teaching music in addition to other functions too. But internet has its side effects too, like regular violation of intellectual property rights, creativity pilferage, plagiarism and unauthorized copying.
