THE ECOLOGICAL UNCONSCIOUS: MADNESS, MYSTICISM, AND THE AUSTRALIAN ENVIRONMENT IN THE NOVELS OF PATRICK WHITE

Avlokita Sodhi & Dr. Amit Dhawan

Issue: Jul-Aug, 2025 | Volume/Issue:14/90 | Page No.: 1 - 6

This paper argues that Patrick White’s literary project constitutes a profound exploration of what theorist Theodore Roszak termed the “ecological unconscious”—the innate, psychic bond between humans and the natural world. In a body of work deeply engaged with the Australian landscape, White repeatedly stages confrontations between the individual ego and the vast, non-human environment. Through an ecocritical reading of three major novels—Voss (1957), The Tree of Man (1955), and Riders in the Chariot (1961)—this analysis demonstrates that White systematically dismantles the anthropocentric worldview. What is often interpreted by society within the novels as “madness” is re-framed as a form of mystical, ecological awakening. Characters like Voss, Stan Parker, and the visionaries in Riders undergo psychic disintegration or transcendence that is directly catalyzed by their encounters with the Australian land. This paper contends that White presents these ruptures not as pathological conditions, but as necessary, albeit often terrifying, pathways to a more authentic state of being that acknowledges humanity’s embeddedness within a larger ecological and spiritual totality. By comparing White’s approach to other literary treatments of landscape, his unique and radical ecological vision comes into sharper focus.

In the process of empowering oneself holistically, one cannot undermine the role of self-efficacy. Further, coping with everyday hassles effectively and most importantly our perception of stress plays a very crucial role in grooming ourselves adequately.  Considering the importance of both in this techno-friendly world, the present study was conducted to understand internet use, Problematic internet use. In addition, it also looked into self-efficacy and Perceived stress among Undergraduate students in Bhubaneswar and Cuttack. The study adopted Internet Addiction Test (Kimberly young,1998), General Self-efficacy Scale (Schwarzer, et.al;1995) and Perceived Stress Scale (PSS, Sheldon Cohen,1988) on 104 participant undergraduate students (48 male ,56 female). The study revealed a positive correlation (r= .590) between internet use and perceived stress among undergraduate students. Further, it was revealed that gender has significant effect on internet use (t= 1.99, p<.01**), self-efficacy (t= -2.97, p<.02**) and perceived stress (t= 1.13, p<.03**). Hence, the study is expected to be helpful in addressing various mental health issues and will support the future research.

Local governance plays a pivotal role in implementing family planning programs in Uttar Pradesh (UP), India’s most populous state, where high fertility rates and unmet contraceptive needs persist. This systematic review examines the contributions of local governance structures, such as Panchayati Raj Institutions (PRIs) and municipal bodies, to advancing family planning initiatives in UP. Through a comprehensive analysis of peer-reviewed studies, government reports, and policy documents, this paper explores how decentralized governance facilitates community engagement, resource allocation, and service delivery. Key findings highlight the role of PRIs in awareness campaigns, the integration of Accredited Social Health Activists (ASHAs) in grassroots mobilization, and challenges like resource constraints and socio-cultural barriers. Recommendations include strengthening PRI capacity, enhancing intersectoral coordination, and addressing gender and caste-based disparities to improve family planning outcomes. This review underscores the critical interplay between local governance and reproductive health in achieving sustainable development goals in UP.

A CARNIVAL OF FRAGMENTS: WILLIAM GADDIS'S POSTMODERN DEPICTION OF AMERICAN IDENTITY AND SOCIAL DECAY

William Gaddis’s novels stand as monumental critiques of the postmodern condition in America, using radical formal experimentation to mirror the fragmentation of identity and social decay. This paper argues that through techniques such as unattributed dialogue, chaotic narrative structure, and a pervasive theme of forgery, Gaddis creates a “carnival of fragments”—a mimetic representation of a society where authentic meaning has been replaced by economic logic and simulacra. Drawing on the theoretical frameworks of Jean-François Lyotard, Fredric Jameson, and Mikhail Bakhtin, this analysis examines The Recognitions and J R to demonstrate how Gaddis’s aesthetic embodies the collapse of grand narratives and the commodification of human experience. By comparing his methods to those of contemporaries like Thomas Pynchon and Don DeLillo, the paper also addresses critical remarks of misanthropy and inaccessibility, ultimately positioning Gaddis’s difficulty as an ethical stance against a culture of passive consumption. His work is presented not as a nihilistic spectacle but as a profound moral indictment, insisting that the struggle to find coherence within his chaotic text is analogous to the struggle for authenticity in postmodern America.

THE PERSONAL IS POLITICAL: MARRIAGE AS A MICROCOSM OF INDIAN SOCIETY IN THE WORKS OF ANITA DESAI

Anita Desai stands as a colossus in the landscape of Indian Writing in English, renowned for her unflinching exploration of the human psyche, particularly the inner lives of women navigating the complex terrains of identity and belonging. While her novels are often lauded for their exquisite psychological realism, a deeper reading reveals that the personal anguish of her protagonists is never merely personal. Instead, Desai masterfully employs the most fundamental unit of social organization—marriage—as a potent microcosm. Within the confined walls of the marital home, she refracts and examines the grand, often tumultuous, narratives of a nation in transition. The private despair, the silent rebellions, and the emotional incarceration of her female characters are not isolated tragedies of incompatible individuals but are symptomatic of a wider societal malaise. Desai’s work thus becomes a powerful literary embodiment of the second-wave feminist credo that “the personal is political.” This paper will argue that through a meticulous dissection of marriages in novels such as Cry, the Peacock, Fire on the Mountain, and Clear Light of Day, Anita Desai exposes the institution as a primary mechanism through which patriarchal, social, and historical pressures are exerted, rendering the domestic sphere a concentrated battlefield for India’s soul.

The present study titled "Teaching Competence of Teachers Working in Secondary Schools of Mayurbhanj District" aimed to access and compare the teaching competency levels of secondary school teachers with respect to gender, qualification, experience, and age. The study adopted a descriptive survey method involving 150 teachers from 11 secondary schools in Mayurbhanj District, selected through purposive sampling. A self-developed teaching competency questionnaire was used to collect data, covering dimensions like content knowledge, instructional strategies, classroom management, student engagement, ICT integration, and assessment and feedback. The Shapiro-Wilk test indicated a significant difference in the variance of teaching competency scores across different groups (p=.000), implying the need for non-parametric testing. The study applied the Mann-Whitney U test for analysis. The findings revealed that female teachers demonstrated slightly higher teaching competency levels compared to male teachers, but the difference was not statistically significant. Similarly, teaching competency showed no significant variation with respect to gender, qualification, experience, and age. The study concludes that teaching competency among secondary school teachers in Mayurbhanj District remains consistent across demographic variables. It suggests the need for continuous professional development and training programs to further enhance teaching competencies. Future studies could be conducted with larger sample sizes for broader generalizations.

Values are essential beliefs shared by human beings which distinguish good deeds from the deeds which are not considered good, thereby giving meaning to life. Human Values are deeply embedded in our conscious that we do not even know that they even existed.  Every human being is guided by a set of core values which constitutes their intrinsic foundation.

In 1942, with the Nazis occupying Holland, 13-year-old Anne Frank and her Jewish family went into hiding in the "secret annex" of an old office building. While living there, Anne recorded her experiences in a diary. By turns thoughtful, moving, and amusing, her account offers a fascinating commentary on human courage and a compelling self-portrait of an extraordinary young woman whose life was tragically cut short. Discovered in the attic in which she spent the last years of her life, Anne Frank's remarkable diary has become a world classic. It is a powerful reminder of the horrors of war. It is an eloquent testament to the human spirit and the Human Values ingrained in the Diary are a good source of learning to the readers of all ages, young and old.

PSEUDOSCIENTIFIC BELIEFS, MEDIA LITERACY, AND NEED FOR TEACHER EDUCATION

In the present information-rich world, media resources are increasingly responsible for promoting pseudoscientific beliefs, because the misinformation is proliferating readily due to the use of these resources. These media resources disseminate myths and unscientific knowledge in the absence of the ability to differentiate between unscientific knowledge, specifically in the academic space where teachers and students are directly influenced by media resources. It is essential for teachers to critically examine the media content and differentiate between scientifically valid information and misconceptions. Media literacy is the only way to combat these issues in educational practices. A previous study revealed a lower ability among teachers to discern fact from fiction. They emphasised the role of media literacy in addressing pseudoscientific beliefs among teachers. Therefore, a correlational survey was employed using a five-point Likert scale to determine the level and relationship between media literacy and pseudoscientific beliefs among school teachers in Indian schools.

DIGITAL DIVIDE AND INFORMATION SOCIETY: A SOCIOLOGICAL STUDY

The rapid growth of digital technologies has transformed education, work, and social life, making access to the information society a key driver of development. Yet, not all individuals enjoy equal opportunities in this digital era. This study explores the relationship between educational level, income status, access to digital technologies, and participation in the information society. Using survey data from 100 respondents, crosstabulation and correlation analyses were applied to examine how education and income shape digital engagement. The results show strong positive correlations: higher educational attainment is closely linked with better digital access (r=0.789), while higher income strongly influences participation in the information society (r=0.721). These findings are consistent with previous studies, such as Helsper (2008), who emphasized that socioeconomic status drives ICT access, and Afzal et al. (2023), who found that rural and low-income students face persistent digital barriers. Together, these studies and the present findings highlight that access alone is not enough; skills, confidence, and affordability play equally important roles in shaping digital inclusion. The study underscores the urgent need for inclusive policies, affordable digital infrastructure, and targeted literacy programs that address both educational and economic disparities. By doing so, societies can ensure that technology acts as a bridge rather than a barrier.

In today’s competitive talent market, organizations are realizing that employee experience (EX) goes far beyond traditional engagement surveys. EX now covers every aspect of an employee’s journey—from their work environment and digital tools to their sense of purpose and well-being. This paper explores how EX can be transformed into a lasting source of competitive advantage, especially in the post-pandemic world where flexibility and wellness have become central to workplace culture.

The study uses employee surveys across IT, BFSI, and education sectors in India, along with case studies of companies known for strong EX practices. The evidence shows that firms investing in flexible work options, health and wellness initiatives, and career development opportunities not only achieve better retention rates but also enhance their employer brand and customer satisfaction levels. The results suggest a clear link between employee well- being and organizational success, strengthening the case for EX as a strategic priority rather than just an HR function.

The paper proposes a comprehensive EX framework that integrates HR policies, leadership practices, and digital platforms to improve both employee and organizational outcomes. By positioning EX as a business strategy, companies can build resilient workplaces where employee happiness fuels long-term competitiveness.
